Go is a single by Grimes featuring BloodPop [prev. Blood Diamonds], as a stand alone single. A remix by BloodPop appears as the 16th track on the Japanese edition of Art Angels.

Background[]

On December 2, 2014, Grimes released the demo version of Go on her SoundCloud, she wrote on Tumblr:[1]

haha james just sent me this weird demo of go, considering the wackiness of the breakdown i assume this is the orig demo cuz we were extremely caffeinated that day in any case i dunno if its particularly different from the ‘final version’ but im always interested in hearing demo versions of things so i figured yall mite b. i think we mighta mixed a bit of the soul out of it in retrospect, i appreciate the absurdity of mike’s 2nd drop, the thicker snares in the intro etc. its a bit more crowded also these are demo vocals for songwriting purposes only and they suck a lot so dont mind them.

Trivia[]

  • It was originally written for Rihanna, who declined to record the song, leading to Grimes and Diamonds to record the song themselves.[2]
  • A widely spread rumour states that Grimes scrapped her entire original fourth album because of the negative reception to this song, but this is not the case as Go was never intended for said album and the actual reason why the material was scrapped is because it was "depressing".[3]

Artwork[]

Grimes wrote on Tumblr:[4]

here is the cover art i made for go! it’s weirdly a prophesy cuz the two people in the painting are mikes girlfirend hana (a musical genius who will hopefully release her music soon) and ray (also a musical genius) who mixed the song and mixed all my live tracks among other things - but i started this painting before i met either of them.  trippy

Behind the Scenes

Background

The video was directed by Grimes and her brother, Mac Boucher, under the production alias Roco-Prime, and was inspired by Dante's Inferno. Grimes shared the following statement about the video:[5]

"It's our take on Dante's Inferno. The circles of hell reflect more contemporary issues though. We shot a bunch at the salton sea which is basically an apocalyptic wasteland filled with dead fish because of human carelessness, the bullet hole hallway a la korn freak on a leash, etc. If you look closely, you can find clues. Haha, but in the usual fashion it is also abstract enough to just be a trippy visual accompaniment to the song".

The introductory statement of the music video is also from Dante Alighieri's poem Divine Comedy, where it is the first verse of the first part - Inferno, Canto I.[6]

Lyrics[]

Dreams, they feel like memories when I dream of you
Time won't stay, it'll stretch itself out from a minute to days
And I'd like to think that we don't dream to wipe it off
'Cos I've been here

Living up, giving up
When I go, can I go with you, you?
When I go, can I go with...
Go, go, go, go, go with
Go with
Go, go, go, go, go
(Blood diamonds)

Happy scenes, a stupid dream when I dream of you
They don't stay, it might all be delusion but I couldn't say
And I'd like to think that we don't dream just to dream it off
'Cos I've been here

In love, give it up
When I go, can I go with you, you?
When I go, can I go with...
Go, can I go with
Go, can I go with
Go, can I go with
Go, can I go with
Go, can I go with
Go, can I go with
You

Dreams, when I dream of you
Time won't stay, it'll stretch itself out from a minute to days
And I'd like to think that we don't dream to wipe it off
'Cos I've been here

Living up, giving up
When I go, can I go with you, you?
When I go, can I go with...

(ve ve-ve)
(ve-ve)
Go, go, go, go (Blood Diamonds)

Happy scenes, a stupid dream when I dream of you
They don't stay, it might all be delusion but I couldn't say
And I'd like to think that we don't dream just to dream it off
'Cos I've been here

Living up, giving up
When I go, can I go with you, you?
When I go, can I go with-
Go, can I go with-
Go, can I go with-
Go, can I go with-
Go, can I go with-
Go, can I go with-
Go, can I go with you
